Breast Lift
Over time, many women notice changes in their breasts, such as loss of firmness or a lower position on the chest. These changes may result from pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or the natural aging process. A breast lift, also known as mastopexy, can restore a more youthful, uplifted appearance by reshaping and elevating the breast tissue.
Our board-certified plastic surgeons take a personalized approach to every procedure, carefully listening to your concerns and goals. Whether performed on its own or in combination with breast augmentation, fat grafting, or breast reduction, a breast lift can help you feel more confident and comfortable in your skin.
What Is a Breast Lift?
A breast lift is a surgical procedure designed to raise and reshape the breasts by removing excess skin and tightening the surrounding tissue. This creates a more youthful breast contour and can reposition the nipples to a higher, more natural level.
Breast lift surgery does not significantly change the size of your breasts, but it can be combined with breast augmentation or fat grafting for added volume or with breast reduction to decrease size while achieving a lifted look. Many women choose mastopexy to reverse the effects of pregnancy, breastfeeding, or weight changes, while others seek treatment simply to feel more like themselves again.
At Carolina Plastic Surgery, our surgeons are committed to achieving results that look natural and beautifully complement your body proportions.
Am I a Candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?
A breast lift may be right for you if you are bothered by sagging or drooping breasts and want to restore a firmer, more youthful shape. You may be a good candidate if:
- Your breasts have lost shape, firmness, or position due to aging, pregnancy, or weight changes.
- Your nipples point downward or fall below the breast crease.
- You notice stretched skin or enlarged areolas.
- You are in good overall health, at a stable weight, and a non-smoker.
During your consultation, your surgeon will examine your breast tissue, skin elasticity, and nipple position, and discuss your goals in detail. This personalized evaluation allows us to recommend the best approach for your unique needs.
What Does the Breast Lift Procedure Involve?
Breast lift surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and may take two to three hours depending on the complexity of your procedure. Several incision patterns may be used, and your surgeon will recommend the one most appropriate for your anatomy and desired outcome. Common options include:
- Peri-areolar incision (“donut lift”) – made around the areola, often used for mild sagging.
- Vertical incision (“lollipop lift”) – made around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease, ideal for moderate sagging.
- Anchor incision – made around the areola, vertically down, and along the breast crease, used for more significant sagging.
Through these incisions, your surgeon will remove excess skin, reshape the breast tissue, and reposition the nipples and areolas. If needed, the areolas can also be made smaller to create a more balanced look. When the breasts have been reshaped, the incisions are closed and a supportive bra or dressings are placed to help with healing.
What Can I Expect in My Breast Lift Recovery?
After your breast lift, it is normal to experience swelling, bruising, and some discomfort in the first few days. You will need to wear a supportive surgical bra to protect your results and help minimize swelling.
Most patients can return to light activities within one week, though heavy lifting and strenuous exercise should be avoided for four to six weeks. Your surgeon will provide detailed aftercare instructions tailored to your recovery needs, including how to care for your incisions, medications to manage discomfort, and when to return for follow-up visits.
When Will I See My Breast Lift Results?
The results of a breast lift are visible almost immediately, though it can take several weeks for swelling to resolve and the breasts to settle into their final shape. Scars from the procedure will fade over time and can be minimized with proper care. Many patients find that their results last for many years, particularly if they maintain a stable weight and healthy lifestyle.
